If we are talking scooter songs, there’s one that stands head and shoulders above all others in terms of success. And we certainly aren’t talking about Lambretwist here either…
Back in 1999, Italian band LunaPop blasted into the charts with their ode to the Vespa 50 Special and its liberating properties. The song reached Number 1 in Italy, charted highly in Spain and ended the year as Italy’s 5th best selling single of the year.
50 Special charts a time when every Italian teenager had a scooter to get to school on, but the cooler kids knew the advantage of a genuine Vespa smallframe, possibly because you could tune the knackers off them.
Sadly the world has moved on. Lunapop split in 2002 but lead singer Cesare Cremonini still hosts videos for all the different versions on his Vimeo channel.
Various versions of the song, promo material and videos exist. Given the use of the Vespa trademark, Piaggio did support the song for a while, allowing the Word Vespa to be used on the CD cover. Additionally there’s a version of the video where the guys are riding contemporary ET2 Vespas, but for the final version cartoon ‘Vespas’ more akin to the subject of the song were used.
So, this begs the question, do you know a better scooter song than this bouncy pop ditty from the end of the century? There are plenty with scooters in the videos, but as regards songs ABOUT scooters, do you know anything better?
