Aprilia are showcasing their first “Urban Adventure” scooter at Eicma. The all new SR GT will come in a choice of 125 or 200cc, the 125 boasts the latest generation Piaggio i-get engine which produces 14.75 bhp. Meanwhile the ‘200’ uses a longer stroke and brand new Nikasil coated alloy cylinder to give a capacity of 174cc. It also uses a new piston and redesigned head to improve combustion efficiency. The engine makes and 17.43 bhp and 16.5Nm of torque.
Both engines are fitted with the Piaggio Start & Stop system. This system does away with a traditional starter motor and uses a brushless device fitted directly to the crankshaft.
According to Aprilia the 125’s fuel consumption is 40 km/l whilst the 200 achieves 38.km/l as measured using the WMTC cycle distance.
There’s no mistaking the aggressive stance of this new scooter and Aprilia are keen to point out that they’ve built it to be a rugged machine. It features a double cradle frame in high-strength steel and has Showa suspension all round, 33mm fork stanchions up front with 122mm of fork travel (22% more than it’s closest competitor). At the rear the twin shocks are adjustable for five preload settings and have 102mm of travel (7% more than the competition).
It runs on 14″ 110/80 and 13″ 130/70 knobby tread tyres and can be stopped using a 260mm front disc and 220mm rear, both discs are ‘petal’ to help dissipate heat and have ABS.
Ground clearance is also a big part of the design ethos, with 175mm of clearance, which according to Aprilia is a “Never before seen value for traditional compact GT scoters.” It allows the rider to get up and down kerbs, descend from any altitude and get up bumps. It should help in the real world where cobbles, tram lines, potholes and the like are an every ride obstacle. The scooter can also be used off-road for a bit of extra fun.
On a practical level, the SR has a 25-litre undersea space (large enough for a full face helmet we’re told) and there’s an optional 33-litre aluminium top case. All the instruments are LCD and it can utilise the optional Aprilia MIA for full connectivity.
We’ll look forward to riding one soon.
