Based on the Yamaha Tricity 300 3-wheeler but with added tech and enhanced aerodynamics this hybrid has been designed specifically for the police, in conjunction with the Northamptonshire Constabulary.
British engineering company White Motorcycle Concepts are behind the WMC300FR scooter, which has been designed to be used as an eco-friendly fully operational first responder vehicle. Three years of pioneering research into drag reduction aerodynamics has lead to a hybrid petrol/electric scooter that can reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to a conventional scooter. Drag has been reduced by using WMC’s patented Venturi Duct which reduces drag by pushing air through the scooter, rather than around it. The system is aided by aerodynamic front mudguards and wheel covers.
The Yamaha 292cc single-cylinder engine has been adapted to feature hybrid power assist. It utilises two proven and robust 56v 12Ah detachable lithium-ion batteries made by EGO Power+. These innovative batteries can be fast-charged in multiples of six from a standard plug socket, which reduces downtime between charges. With all new petrol and diesel-powered sales allegedly being phased out by 2030 and a lack of infrastructure to cope in an all-electric world a hybrid makes more sense than an all-electric vehicle.
Thy 5kW hybrid assist works at lower speeds to improve acceleration and range whilst using less petrol. As speed increases the conventional engine takes over and aerodynamics come into play to further increase fuel economy and reduce emissions.
Accessibility
Like most three-wheeled scooters the WMC300FR and of course the Yamaha Tricity 300 can be ridden on a car licence, which further enhances the accessibility of the vehicle for First Responders who may not have a motorcycle licence.
Northants Police Chief Constable & UK Police lead for Motorcycles, Nick Adderley said: “COP26 showed that there is a will by all Governments around the world to reduce their CO2. We need to turn this will into action and lead by example. By adopting vehicles like the WMC300FR we are able to show the world what is possible and how innovation can be part of the solution for CO2 reduction without compromising our functional role in society.
As well as meet the green agenda we also need vehicles that are fit for purpose and what we see in the WMC300FR is one of the first vehicles that can achieve both these aims. We are only 2 fleet cycles away from having to meet the targets set by central government and so I am delighted that we have started those conversations now, with the WMC300FR.
As the national Police chief lead for motorcycling, it is incredible to have been involved in this project from the off, incorporating what we needed in a first responder vehicle. One of the things that I was really clear on in our initial discussions was that the motorcycle should have presence and stand out in our community Policing, provide accessibility to officers and be reflective of the professionalism of the police service, the WMC300FR ticks all those boxes. I think that introducing the WMC300FR will make a real difference and I know that this will be welcomed by the police service.
Piaggio MP3 Hybrid
Of course, SLUK readers will probably know that this isn’t a new concept. Piaggio released a production 125cc hybrid MP3 way back in 2009, then followed it up in 2010 with a 300. Although it’s fair to say they were probably too early to that particular party and it didn’t do as well as it would do now.
Ridden on a car license! Gonna need a lot of paramedics to scrape up the numptys who will think it’s a three wheeler car . Typical ignorance of motorcycling .
