SYM UK extends scooter warranty to a market-leading five years.

Yes it’s true: all new SYM scooters and motorcycles over 120cc that are registered from 1 March 2016 onwards will come with a five year (60,000km) parts and labour warranty, which as far as we know is a first for a two-wheeled manufacturer, in the UK at least.

Those buying a sub-120cc machine get something too, by way of a three year (30,000km) parts and labour warranty, another good deal and something that could prove a decision-maker in the showrooms.

Of course there is smallprint to adhere to regarding these warranties, and you can read it all here, but the main criteria is that the vehicle is serviced regularly according to the manufacturers recommended intervals, by an approved dealer or agent, and genuine Sym parts are used. The cost of the servicing – parts and labour – are of course down to the owner, as is the booking of such services which will then be recorded by the servicing agent and details passed on to Sym UK.

Consumable parts are not included as part of the warranty, and certain other areas such as wear and tear come in to effect too, but they appear to all be things that you’d expect from a regular vehicle warranty.

What is interesting is whether this will set a precedent for other manufacturers or concessionaires to follow.

In the car industry there are a couple of players proudly announcing the length of their vehicles’ warranty by way of rear window stickers that I’m sure we’ve all spotted as we filter past stationary traffic, but could the same happen in the scooter world too?

We hope so, as anything that raises the bar regarding quality and customer satisfaction can only be a good thing. The question is, who will be the next to have such confidence in their two-wheeled product?
