Fit and forget
Sometimes it’s easy to fit and forget a product, especially if it fits, works as it should do and doesn’t cause you any hassle. That’s exactly what happened with these Scootopia cables. They were fitted to my Series 1 Framebreather during a rebuild three years ago as a complete set (other than the speedo).
I chose them because they look authentic with their faux grease nipples, a nicely finished detail, but they’re also nylon lined (being nylon lined means you don’t have to grease or lubricate them). The cables also seemed to be of good quality. To be fair I’ve not had anything that isn’t of good quality from Scootopia. They have most of their products made especially for them to a very high standard. That attention to detail goes as far as the vintage style red and blue packaging that many of their products are sent out in. Packaging so nice looking that I’ve had one of their boxes sat on my office shelf for the last year or so.
Smooth operator
In operation the cables are pretty smooth, in fact, you only notice just how smooth they are when you ride another scooter with ‘ordinary’ cables fitted.
Bearing in mind this has been my main rally bike since the rebuild and has covered some decent mileage I’ve not had any problems with the cables other than a snapped throttle inner coming back from Mablethorpe at the end of last year. The cables themselves are showing no signs of wear, the ends aren’t fraying and the outers are still looking great as well for their age.
The thing that jogged my memory and prompted me to review them is that I’m just starting another project and will be needing new cables for that one. Unsurprisingly I’ll be fitting another set of these.
Colour change
Scootopia have since updated the colour of the grey cable outers so that it’s a closer match to the originals (black is also available of course), they’ve also got a nifty chrome cable clamp that holds the grease nipples in the kind of symmetrical fashion even the most obsessed OCD Lambretta owner would approve of.
