Boom! It was meant to be.
The sun gave the SLUK custom show its approval, as did over 200 scooterists and racers from around the UK.
Earlier this year we turned down the opportunity to co-promote a scooter event because, quite simply, there are already enough events on the calendar.
In fact there are too many promoters jostling for the scooterist dollar, as the cancellation of the Great Northern Mod & Ska Festival – with no refunds – already proves.
Petrol & Pistons (P&P) show was a bit different though. This was a situation where the BSSO scooter race organisation were offered a new venue for a race meeting that had been cancelled from their calendar on the same weekend.

P&P is a one-day car event which takes place at Croft Circuit near Darlington. It is part of the Time Attack car championships where turbo-nutter street cars can batter the lap times of British Touring Cars by around 4 or 5 seconds a lap. It attracts thousands of car enthusiasts and clubs. What better place to introduce both scooter racing and scooter customising to a new audience?
We at SLUK volunteered to handle the custom side of things, with an open-air scooter show in a prime location on the site with mahoosive trophies sponsored by SLUK and Petrol & Pistons. All we needed was kind weather and support from the North Eastern scooter community for a Sunday-only meeting.
We wondered, is SLUK influential enough to draw some quality scooters, or were we going to be left embarrassed handing out more trophies than machines on display?

No need to fret.
Our first show entrants came in the form of Lumpy Lee’s lovely duo-tone JB Tuning missiles. Our first punters were two lads on GTSs who’d taken the ‘weather window’ opportunity to flee the biblical wash-out of the Vespa Club’s Lakeland 100 road trial. More on that when Noah finally makes land…
Darlington and the North East are really a hot-bed of quality scooter construction. The A19s, Wearside Wanderers and Darlo SC were amongst the many clubs really doing us proud with a splendid array of customising which put many of the cars to shame.
We managed to shoot a couple of delicious custom scooters over the weekend for your future delectation.
It’s not all about the custom though; beautiful unrestored machines like the TV175 S2 with PAV trailer and Scootboot blew us away, along with a jaw-droppingly original Douglas-made Rod-model Vespa.
Combining a custom show with the race meeting worked perfectly. Everyone had somewhere safe to leave their scooters while watching the racing. The entry price of £10 was cheaper than you’d pay to spectate at a normal race meeting and yet Petrol & Pistons managed to fit in more scooter races than usual (6 in total) and offered way more in terms of spectacle off-track.
It was win-win for everyone. And you really can’t beat that as a score…

We’ll cover the racing separately later this week. Suffice to say that the car clubs were pretty impressed, the grandstands were full during the scooter sessions. The front-running scooters were actually lapping at the same speeds as some of the lower car classes.
