It’s a week before Warmwell and surprise surprise the weather is awful, the weather forecast can’t make its mind up for the weekend and I don’t know if I’m gonna drown or be wearing shorts for my ride down on Friday. As the weekend approaches the forecast becomes a little more consistent. When I say consistent I mean it’s saying it MIGHT be dry, but then again it MIGHT not (thanks for nothing Met Office).

As Friday dawns I go old school and look out of the window to check the weather. It’s lovely, bright sunshine, not too cold, not too windy, in short, a perfect late autumn day. As it’s only 70 miles from home to Warmwell I haven’t got to leave early so I get packed, load the scoot and head off in my own time. As my bike’s not been the most reliable this year (ahem) and I’m in no hurry I decided to avoid the motorway and take the A roads up through the New Forest into Dorset and then on to Warmwell.

It’s a lovely, if slow ride, the sun is shining and all is good. Up through Southampton with all that city riding entails, though the ride along the A31 through the New Forest heathland more than makes up for it, it’s just fantastic, if you ever get the chance to explore the New Forest by scoot definitely take it. Up to Bere Regis, on to the A35 for a few miles, then a pleasant buzz down the country roads to Warmwell.

Happy campers

Arriving at about 3.30 I check in only to find I’ve been beaten by Jolliff and Lee (recently famous for camping in the middle of Bridlington) to the chalet. I get my wristband and am greeted by two guys in elf tee-shirts and Santa hats, after mercilessly taking the mick it slowly dawns on me that I’m going to wearing that same outfit on Saturday as I’d offered to help out on the gate (better described as the door as it’s inside, but you know what I mean), oops!

After unloading the scoot I test the beer, the first of many tests over the weekend. Later the girls arrive with more beer, so the beer tests continue… hic. A few hours later we all head up to the main venue for beer and the band, but not before we fall into a bunch of chalets on the way, each one enjoying the pre-crimbo vibe in one way or another. When we get in the do, the Northern Soul room is rocking, as is the main room.

Friday night has The Decatonics, an established Dorset ska band playing, a tight eight-piece band, they play plenty of well-known covers to an appreciative audience, skanking well into the night.

Saturday comes all too soon, and it’s a wander around the parts fair and outdoor custom show, though by now the weather’s turned and it’s wet and windy. I watch a few hardy souls follow The Lowriders SC out on their lunchtime rideout, I don’t envy them.

I do my stint on the gate… no amount of begging, whining and cajoling can get me out of wearing my Santa tee-shirt, so I end up looking like an angry Buddy The Elf, at least they’d lost the hats by then. Music Saturday afternoon is supplied by Double Barrel, a two-piece (yes you read that right) ska/covers band that are simply great at what they do, putting a smile on the audience’s faces.

Saturday evening is spent at the bar, and I’m noticing a theme for the weekend, everyone that I speak to has one question for me, ‘Did you breakdown on the way up?’ God, anyone would think my scoot was unreliable, and hardly ever got me anywhere. Oh, hmmm, anyhow, back to the rally…

Basketcase

Saturday night’s band is the awesome Basketcase, rally favourites that never fail to put on a great show and Saturday was no exception. They always dress up to a theme, and perhaps unsurprisingly they had dressed as elves and Santa and had the place bouncing. Sadly all good things must come to an end, and so it was I had to head home Sunday morning, missing the Sunday night SWSC party, which by all accounts was a great end to the season.

Oh and before anyone asks, no I didn’t break down on the way home.
