Is it really the fifth National Scooter Rally of the year already? Errr, well, sort of. Who would ever have thought things would pan out the way they have this year? At least there’s a bit of light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel though at long last.
This weekend would have seen many of us heading to Weymouth, a beautiful little seaside town on the south-west coast of England. Sadly, this one was also a double-whammy because it had the added excitement of being the first brand new rally location for seemingly years. Not too many of our readers will have been there for the last Weymouth in 1983.
Sowing the seeds
Sourcing and organising a new rally town take lots of time and effort. Forging new relationships with the ‘powers that be’, police, council, fire brigade etc. Then finding a suitable venue for a do large enough to cope with over 1000 people (the BSRA minimum criteria for an evening event on a National), finding and organising a campsite, speaking to local bars, restaurants and making sure the town is ready for an invasion of very thirsty scooter riders.
It all takes months of emails, phone calls, multiple visits to the town and that’s before you even give the event the green light and can start planning things properly. The South West Scooter Clubs had already done all the hard work in Weymouth before the world was abruptly closed in March. With hotels and hospitality slowly opening back up this month, it meant people who had accommodation booked couldn’t get a refund (unless it was on free cancellation).

Inevitably this weekend will see quite a few of you heading down to Weymouth, even though the rally itself was cancelled a few weeks ago. It will, no doubt be a cracking weekend away. It’ll be the first time many of you have been out ‘properly’ all year. Yes, out, out! The first time you’ll have been on a pub crawl with mates and fellow scooterists.
Whilst you’re out enjoying yourselves just remember that you’re down there as ambassadors for scootering. This town will hopefully be a National Rally venue again in the future. Try not to upset the locals by gathering or riding in large groups, flouting social distancing, or COVID rules and regulations when you’re out and about. Just go down there and have a great weekend at the closest we’ve had to a National Rally so far in 2020.

Weymouth Rallery?
We were planning to send Booga down there to take a few photos for us but decided in light of the current COVID-19 restrictions in England, that we didn’t want to encourage gatherings – or be seen to be promoting unofficial ‘rallies’ at this moment in time. Especially when the organisers had officially cancelled the event.
Weymouth patches available
The SWSC will be in town over the weekend for a few beers. Stuart Lanning will have some Weymouth patches for sale with him. They’re limited edition and he wants them to go to scooter riders. If you see him, they’re £3 whilst stocks last.
We have plenty of new riding kit in from RST/Tucano/By City/Resurgence and other cool brands
