Gaskets produced with a silicone bead should be familiar to anyone who works on modern motorcycle or scooter engines.
The chief advantage of this system is that they provide improved sealing without the need to add any additional gasket sealing compounds, which makes both assembly and removal much easier.
The chief disadvantage of this system, if you have even bought a set of gaskets for a Japanese engine, is that they are expensive. Adding the silicone bead is a specialist process.
Scooter Center’s BGM brand has struck a decent balance between cost and quality with these Italian-made composite gaskets. In addition to the Vespa PX versions they are now also available for Lambretta side casings and Mag housings.
Given the wear, tear and repairs on old Lambretta casings especially, they are prone to irritating leaks because thread repairs tend to diminish the gasket surface area.
Use
The silicone gaskets can be used either dry or greased. The advantages of greasing them is that they can be held in position but grease also eases disassembly.

Nice video as usual – but you never said if they cured the oil leak? Or am I missing something?
And anyone in the UK likely to stock these?
They have at the moment but the engine is still being rebuilt so I won’t know until it’s had oil splashed around and been up to temperature a few times.
