In the current scootering world we love and enjoy, it’s relatively easy to get your scooter and indeed your riding gear insured. There are a plethora of well established insurers out there to get yourselves covered. But what about you and indeed your pillion? What happens in the event of injury?
Third Party cause
Most Accident Management companies and indeed some insurers may well allow you to claim for personal injury. In the case of the former, this may take some time as the legal wranglings ensue. With the latter, well it depends really on the depth and coverage of your policy. But where do you stand if there’s no third party involved? Accidents on two wheels can occur for a multitude of reasons, that diesel slick you didn’t see in the rain, a tyre blowing out or indeed a bad engine seize you were unable to control, the list goes on and on….
I binned it on the maiden voyage.
Sad fact, Bitter Experience.
It’s also a sad fact that if you have an “off” on your scooter, chances are you’re going to injure yourself and sadly but potentially break, dislocate or rupture something. None of us are getting any younger! This can often lead to weeks or months in a cast, away from riding and away from work. I speak with some experience too, many years ago I binned my freshly built S-Type at 25 MPH going into a corner when the front tyre blew out. My bike was in a mess and I’d gained a broken knee into the bargain. I had no cover at the time and was off work for weeks, my scooter was off the road for considerably longer.
Insurance expertise.
As a scooterist, I also work with Insurance, mostly the commercial and Personal Protection kind. One of the UK’s largest Insurance companies I deal with, now offer a life policy which includes something called a Fractures Benefit (although more than fractures are covered, see below). The great thing about this policy is that it doesn’t just cover you whilst you’re out on your scooter. It provides Life and Fractures cover at all other times during the term of the Policy; literally when you’re at work, rest, or play. It’ll even cover you for a holiday or short scooter tour abroad. The premiums are competitive too and can be made to suit most budgets.
More than injured Pride
Over Insured?
The other impressive feature of the Fractures Cover is that you cannot effectively be over-insured. Regardless of what personal injury cover you may already have in place, should you experience one of the defined conditions, for instance a clean break of the upper leg, it will pay you the amount over and above any claim benefit from other insurance policies you can claim on.
Exclusions.
Now we all know that this is insurance and therefore, arranged on risk. There are some exclusions which will apply. These mainly relate to competitive sport, including racing (scooter or otherwise), sprinting or hill climb events. If your other passion involves regular bungee jumping, snowboarding or other regular hazardous pursuits or occupations, you may struggle to get cover. The same applies if you have certain health-related issues If you’re unsure then the best thing is to ask, you may still be able to get a policy.
Worst Case Scenario
The beauty of this policy is that there is a life element included and within reason, this can be as small or large as you like. So, should you leave this mortal during your policy term, your dependents will be left with a Tax Free lump sum. This applies as long as your passing wasn’t self-orchestrated, whilst under the influence, or as a result of a criminal act and a few other causing conditions. Again, if you’re in any doubt ask and seek clarification.

So what’s the Cover?
It provides you with the reassurance of knowing you may receive a lump sum of up to £6,000 if you suffer from one of 18 specified Fractures, 7 specified ligament tears or tendon ruptures, or a dislocation during any 12 month period during the term of the insurance. If you’re a bit like Unlucky Alf off the Fast Show, you could potentially claim 25 times if you’ve opted for a 25 year plan! If I’d have had this cover in place when I binned my Lammy I’d have had the full £6,000 to play with and the bike would have been back on the road considerably sooner.
Fractures
Specified fractures are covered unless the fracture is classified as fatigue, stress or hairline. In the event of multiple fractures, you get a single pay out for the one that carries the most benefit. The fracture must be diagnosed by a consultant.
Dislocation
All joints are covered for dislocation except fingers, thumbs and toes. This is defined as the displacement of bone from its normal position at the joint requiring surgical intervention. Should you be unlucky enough to suffer multiple dislocations, the pay out is on the one that carries the most benefit.
Tendon rupture and Ligament Tear
Tendon rupture is defined as the rupture of a tendon requiring surgical intervention. The tendons covered are the Quadriceps, Achilles, Rotator Cuff and Bicep. Ligament tear is defined as the complete tear of a ligament to the knee, hamstrings or ankle joints, confirmed by radiological imaging. Same rules apply here, with multiple qualifying ruptures or tears, pay out is on the one which provides the most benefit.
Benefits:
The benefits payable on meeting the required definitions are shown in the diagram below.

And the Cost?
Monthly premiums vary dependent on the amount of Life Cover you’d like to put in place and for how long you’d like the term of the insurance to last. Again, policies can usually be tailored to suit your individual needs and budget. All Premiums are paid by monthly Direct Debit over the term of the insurance. Other factors which may affect the price you pay are smoker and health status.

Okay firstly, you need to be a UK mainland resident, registered at a Doctor’s Surgery, be between the age of 16 and 59 and not living or working for prolonged periods of time abroad. Remember this is a Life Insurance policy so all quotes and applications will be the subject of a Medical Questionnaire and underwriting by the Insurer.

Does the policy cover those who are self employed ?
Hi Simon, thanks for the enquiry. Yes, the policy will cover you as a self employed person, indeed it’s ideal for those who are self employed as naturally, they tend to be hit the hardest if they are unable to work as a result of injury. Give me a call or email me if you’d like to discuss further. Thanks once again.
