Cyder Commandos SC Moorland Mayhem Rally | RALLERY

Moorland Mayhem over the weekend of 16th – 17th June was the second offering at Buckfastleigh in Devon by the Cyder Commandos SC and followed on from last years successful shindig. Darren Miles was there and has provided the write up whilst professional photographer and scooterist, Simon Plant of Scooter-Life.com was on hand to take the photos. As with most of the UK over the weekend the weather was well and truly “Scorchio”! By all accounts the rally was pretty hot too!

The green valleys of Devon.

The second Moorland Mayhem scooter rally was blessed with some spectacular weather, it must be said. Wall to wall sunshine meant that shelters and tents were used more for shade than keeping dry. Situated at Buckfastleigh sports ground on the top of a hill meant the view was fantastic too – green Devon valleys, church spires and cloudless blue sky best viewed with a pint or cocktail in your hand.

Back to basics 

This rally is quite a contrast to other South West scooter rallies in that it wasn’t in a holiday complex; there were no chalets, caravans or swimming pools on the site. The only receptionists were members of the Cyder Commandos in a gazebo. Buckfastleigh is not exactly bursting with B&B’s either, so you had to camp. Personally these are the rallies I prefer so I made an effort to get to this one, what with it being only 25 miles away.

Tenner all in

For a tenner all in, you got bands, a cocktail bar/campervan, fish & chip van, hog roast and burgers, bars and some old school entertainment.  A bale toss that seemed to be best attempted after some refreshment, a polythene sheet water slide entertained the kids, volley ball for the truly energetic, and a high striker that generally provided entertainment for the onlookers. A few guys from the ‘make your own entertainment’ school of scooter rallies taught their kids how to play tag on scooters without pranging your show winning ‘Best Vespa’.  I managed a spectacular low score on the high striker that was swiftly beaten by a nine year old girl, so it’s obviously a test of technique over strength.

Taking central place in front of the stage area, gleaming, glistening and bristling with chrome were some fully tricked out mod scooters – including a Who themed Series 2 Lambretta stunner complete with trailer. A nice original LD picked up an award probably just for surviving this long.

What time the acts showing up?

5.15, Dastardly too hot! 

I wasn’t there on Friday, but the bands on Saturday went down well. The 5.15’s started the show at 3.30 with some Who/Jam/New Wave scooter classics, followed by the Dastardlys at 5.15 playing a more eclectic set including a bold attempt at Frank Wilson’s Do I Love You. Ska stalwarts Too Hot wound up the evening. 

Relax and get “fooked-fast”

I thought the rally was pretty well attended, obviously not on national levels, but the vibe was chilled and relaxed. People lounged on straw bales and sofas in the shade, sipping cocktails from coconut shells and entertaining each other in typical scooterist style. There was pretty much everything you needed, including stalls selling clothes, bags, and get you home spares. If you didn’t want to hang around on the site there was a rideout on Saturday just in case you hadn’t ridden far enough, and Totnes, Newton Abbot and even Paignton were just a short ride away. Or of course, a trip to Buckfast Abbey for some of their legendary tonic wine was an option…

Grass roots pure and simple scootering, you’ve gotta love it

So if you fancy some grass roots scootering (quite literally) then I recommend the Moorland Mayhem. The Nationals have their place and rightly so, but these small, basic, fun rallies seem to be getting popular for all the right reasons. Well done to the Cyder Commandos. Roll on Moorland Mayhem 3.
