James refuelling the race-winning Super Monza at Alcarras 6-hour race in Spain

SLUK is deeply saddened to announce the passing of James Campen at the weekend.

James, from Kettering, was one of the most popular racers in the BSSO paddock as well as a rally-going scooterist and keen supporter of the LCGB as part of the Kettering Massive.

He took up scooter racing quite late in life, at first using an old Dave Webster cylinder on a Group 4 Lambretta. With his fast, distinctive riding style he soon became a member of Charlie Edmond Performance Tuning camp, with Phil York spannering for him in the BSSO series.

In 2011 James, along with Charlie Edmonds and Phil Bevis, did something remarkable. They took a Lambretta to a first endurance race victory in Spain at the Alcarras 6-hour. For a British team with no endurance experience to win on a Super-Monza kitted Lambretta first time out was astounding.

In 2012 James went one better and took the BSSO Group 4 title on his Performance Tuning-prepared Lambretta.

In 2014 James used the Cambridge Lambretta sprinter to good effect, clocking 12.9 seconds and 107mph over the quarter mile at Santa Pod and also racing at Pendine Sands.

Despite his many successes, James is more likely to be remembered around the paddock for his entertaining personality. He always seemed to be up for a laugh, a dance or a race.

After a year off in 2105 James returned to racing this year with a PSN-prepared two-stroke engined Scomadi. However, a practice accident injuring his shoulder meant the James did not enter all of this season’s races.

James died at home in his sleep aged 48. I knew James through the BSSO paddock, but also through sharing the track with him in Spain and the roads on the LCGB Coast-to-coast. His passing is a great loss to both the scooter scene and scooter racing in the UK.
