The only sunshine during the Euro Lambretta trip

Why: It was the last we’d see of it for a few days
June 2010 we were off to Spain for Euro Lambretta, taking the overnight ferry to Birkenhead and riding to Southsea ready for another ferry the next morning. A longish trip with a group of scooters and it wasn’t completely uneventful. Mark tried to ride the whole way thinking gearbox oil was an optional extra and had to be relayed from Swindon on a recovery truck.
Sprouley stayed up into the small hours rebuilding his engine for him while the rest of us drank and slept. The next day the ferry was packed with Lambrettas and the sun was blazing, there was a real party atmosphere on board. Once we landed in Spain the sun decided to go into hiding and the rain started but we foolishly decided to stick to our original route through the mountains.
The rain was torrential and the roads became river beds complete with boulders. Pat and Steve naively thought we were a sensible group and decided to tag along with us. She ended up sliding along the road breaking her headset. Gaffa tape and cable ties provided an adequate bodge. We arrived at the rally site soaked but we’d been allocated a chalet which we quickly turned into a drying room, stretching bungees across the ceiling. Those who’d chosen camping were pitied and slept on the floor. Despite the weather we had a great time, although pouring the local cider from a height is a skill we failed to master, most of it ended up on the floor.
The rain didn’t stop until we were in Santander where you could see clouds of steam rising from the hundreds of scooterists waiting for the ferry to England. Our trip home saw us stop at a youth hostel. I’m not sure I’ll ever be forgiven for booking that one. I never knew Royston Vasey was based on a village near Swindon…
P.S. the weather in Belfast had been glorious all weekend.
