Lambretta rear brake cables do the job but they’re fiddly to replace or adjust and they make swapping an engine slightly more time-consuming. It\’s a part that was ripe for improvement. Although others have made cables with threaded ends in the past this one also has an eyelet at the top end and as far as I know is the first commercially available one-piece cable.

 

This new one-piece QR2 – Quick-Release rear brake cable comes from new company, Lambretta Sense (run by former scooter racer, Mark Ellis).

 

 

Fitting

 

Your new one-piece cable has a Vespa T5 style eyelet at the pedal end and a threaded end at the engine side. To fit it you remove your old cable and simply reverse your old cable clamp side plates and put the eyelet in-between the wider gap. It\’s a good idea to use some dry PTFE type lubricant on the cable before fitting.

 

Pop the new stainless pin through and secure it with the ‘R’ clip. Then use the other stainless pin and clip to attach it to your brake pedal. The kit also comes with a rubber rebound buffer for the pedal to stop it hitting the frame.

Feed the cable through the frame and replace the old top hats with the new ones. At the engine end you can refit your original barrel and cable adjuster to the threaded end of the new cable, or use the optional new stainless QR2 one. That’s it, adjust it up and you’re done.

 

Once fitted it\’s easy to remove or replace and swapping an engine means you just need to unwind the adjuster wheel, rather than having to unclamp the cable.

My odd frame

 

I’ve just fitted this to my early Series One Framebrerather. For some reason, this frame has slightly thicker struts than other Series Ones and is shorter between headstock and frame loop (I have to force my in-line spare wheel in with the tyre flat, even with a recess in the toolbox door). When Sticky was developing the Sluk Clips a couple of years ago he had to have a last minute rethink because when we tried fitting the prototype clips to my scooter they wouldn\’t seat properly over the struts, so the clips were made differently.

 

Fitting the QR2 cable to my S1 I found that the end of the eyelet can catch the edge of the strut slightly as you press the brake pedal, it catches on the lip of the thicker than normal strut. The cable operates perfectly well, nice and smooth so it\’s fine and on other scooters shouldn\’t catch at all. If I Dremel a slight chamfer on the bottom edge of the eyelet it will stop it catching, on all other Lambrettas you won\’t have an issue.

Tested on road and in BSSO

 

Team DSC were racing with the QR2 cable in BSSO at Lydden last weekend and Lambretta Sense have fitted them to various scooters so it\’s my scooter rather than the cable design at fault here. Scotty from DSC told us \”All went well, fitted one to Justin\’s group 6, along with your SLUK screen, he qualified in pole, finished 3rd, 4th and 5th in the races, no issues, and worked well. It was easy to fit and more importantly to us easy/fast to fit if an engine change is required.\”

 

Mick Howard has also been testing one on the road on Sign of the Snake.
