Bodge: Verb

A case of make do and mend. Not done properly – but done in an  ‘It’ll do fashion.‘ Typically seen at its best on main routes to the seaside, performed by scooterists at the roadside.

Examples

1: Snapped throttle cable tied around foot and pulled to go faster.

2: Torch taped to headset to replace headlight.

3: Exhaust held on by bungees after bracket snaps.

4: Twig whittled to fashion new throttle tube.

5: Fuel can on back of scooter with pipe used as makeshift tank…

Scooter riders are notorious for bodgery. If something breaks on the way to a rally and there’s no way it can be repaired properly we’ll try anything to get that scooter back on the road. If you’ve got a bodge that you’re proud of be sure to send it in to us…

Martin and Stephen Robinson came up with this ingenious solution on the way to Tenby.

Quote of the day: ‘How big’s your tank?’

“We filled up at Cardiff Gate services on the way to Tenby last weekend. Tazzing down the M4 afterwards, we’d done 10 or 15 miles and the fuel tap boss ripped off the bottom of the fuel tank, 11-litres of fuel scattered along the motorway. Great.

“I towed the old man ½ a mile down the M4 with my scooter until we hit a local town, hoping to find a welder. It was 5.30pm and nowhere was open. The locals in Bridgend were helpful but after an hour of trying, nobody could help so we put our thinking caps on. Eventually, Martin came up with this little bodge…”

That's where the fuel tap used to be That’s where the fuel tap used to be
Who needs a 'proper' fuel tank? Who needs a ‘proper’ fuel tank?

“Martin made a hole in the top of a fuel can and taped a length of fuel pipe into it. The can was bungeed to the rear rack and the pipe routed down under the seat, through the fuel cap hole and down to the carb. A quick suck to start the fuel syphoning and we were ready to roll. The bodge got us the last 75 miles down to Tenby. The things we’ll do to get LCGB championship points…”
