A puncture on the motorway in heavy rain on the way back from Germany, a great test for waterproofs and patience…

Waterproofs are one of those things we (or manufacturers) barely manage to get right. They’re either too clumsy to put on, meaning we’d rather get wet than stop and struggle with tight legs and stubborn zips, or they’re not quite as waterproof as it says on the heavy-duty, big-fancy-worded spec and material list.

Personally I hate having to wear over-waterproofs so opt for decent textiles most of the time for rally use and longer trips but in summer I also like to ride in jeans if it’s hot (so I need waterproofs with me). On longer journeys it’s well worth having an extra set of waterproofs on hand to put on over your textile riding gear. When we’re hit with persistent heavy rain even the best usually-waterproof gear can let us down.

The top and bottoms come in separate bags, they're not as small as the Tucano Nano when packed but are easy to fit in a glovebox or strap on the scooter.

Tucano Urbano are a great brand for scooter riders, not only do they make stylish jackets and rider wear but their stuff actually does what it was designed to do.

The Diluvio Rex is Tucano’s top of the range, heavy-duty two-piece waterproof set. It uses their Hydroscud breathable, windproof and waterproof polyester outer shell. It’s fairly lightweight though as well so isn’t too bulky to wear and it fits neatly into its own sack.

Easy on?

Getting the Diluvios on at the side of the road is one of its first major plus points. The wide zip on the legs means you can quickly get the trousers on over your riding boots and being a two-piece set rather than an all-in-one means you can just wear the trousers if you’re hit by a shower when you’re out riding in jeans. The jacket is also easy to get on, has a decent sized storm flap and a handy waterproof pocket on the zip. It even has a foldaway hood.

Fit

The fit of both jacket and trousers can be altered using the Velcro adjusters and the leg length means you shouldn’t have water running into your boots once you’re sat on the scooter. We’ve used this set all over the UK and Europe during our wet summer and can’t really criticise it for anything (other than maybe the collar could be a bit more generous in size, it chokes you a bit when done up fully). It’s kept us dry, comfortable and also added an extra windproof layer for those times when the rain (or temperature) cools things down just a bit too much.

Sizing

I wear a large textile jacket and the large Diluvio goes over it comfortably so there’s no need to go a size up unless you want to allow extra room for layers in winter. The trousers in the picture above are an XL, we got these by accident so they’re a bit bigger than they need to be.

Verdict

They’re waterproof, heavy duty, easy to get on and look better than most waterproofs when they’re on. For a sub £100 set they’ll not only keep you dry but also last for years to come.
